Hi Steve, just scanned a 7 day old patient with purple discoloration on his right lateral thigh and anterior proximal shin.
They were varicosities which appeared to be coming from within his vastus lateralis and vastus medialis muscles.
I have searched online to see what could cause this (nil birth trauma history) but have found nothing. Anything you have seen?

      Hi Tina,

That is an odd one and I have not seen something similar. I would think a post traumatic cause is unlikely and a congenital malformation is what you have found. Was there any AVM inside any of the thigh or calf muscles? If you can exclude an AVM then you are likely dealing with a congenital incompetent perforator leading to the varicosity.

      Steve.
